How to Get Started with a Company Blog

As mentioned previously, blogging itself is not the ultimate answer to growing your online presence.   It should be part of a broader strategy.  Writing solely for the sake of creating pages of content on your website will likely burn you out and turn you off of writing altogether!

Before you pick up pencil and paper or open up your laptop, follow these tips on starting a blog for your business.  If you have a plan for your blog you’ll be more likely to keep doing it – and see success for your efforts.

Start with a plan  

Think about what your goals are for your blog.  It can be as simple as showcasing company culture, educating clients, or sharing your vision for industry trends.  Who will be writing the content?  Decide who will be responsible for creating the content itself.  Then, plan how you’re going to share your blog posts.  Will you create social media accounts to share your content with followers?  Or send email blasts to current customers?  How often will you post new content?  These are some of the questions you should consider before even writing the very first word.

Know your competition  

In an effort to be an industry “stand out” and differentiate yourself from your competitors, do a little online reconnaissance.  Do your competitors have a blog?  If so, what topics are they writing about?  Even if you end up covering similar topics, you’ll need to know what they’re covering and how you can make your content even better than theirs.

Start writing  

Once you have a strategy in place for what kind of content you’re going to write, how often you’ll post, and how you want to share your content, now is the time to start writing.  Write your content in Word, Google Docs, or some other text editor, and save it in an easy-to-remember place on your computer.  Even if you don’t have the blogging platform itself figured out you can still write.  Writing is the hard part; posting the content can be quick and easy.  If you don’t have the time or the desire to write it yourself, there are companies that will do that for you.

Start posting

When you’re ready for your blog to go live, start posting the content you’ve written according to the schedule you came up with during the planning stage.  Share the blogs as you post them according to your blog plan.
