When I first talk to clients, I hear this all the time: “I feel overwhelmed.” Maybe not in those exact words; maybe it’s in the tone of voice, or tired eyes, or wilted posture. These business owners are so caught up in the day-to-day running of their business that they feel stuck, out of control, and overwhelmed.

It’s not uncommon. It’s natural. And a sign of a growing business.

Sometimes the overwhelm comes from not knowing how to get a growing team on the same page. Sometimes it’s an issue with process, or lack of process.

Whatever the problem is, chances are I’ve seen it – and solved it – before.

Experience Matters

My journey began down under, in Australia, managing the architectural firm working on the Sydney Opera House. I took that experience with me back to the United States and applied it to managing law and accounting firms. Under my careful management, many of those firms grew significantly.

During the same period I started my own business, a graphics database company. This business grew quickly over three years, giving me a taste of what it’s like to manage a rapid growth company.

Three years later, we sold that business and started a new one. This time a custom software company where I was the systems analyst. It was my job to go into a business, figure out what they were trying to accomplish, and how to go about doing so.

When the Internet took off, I knew I needed to understand how it worked and how to work within it. To gain that knowledge, I dug right in with my first Internet company, an e-commerce website for high-end, gourmet chocolate. Once again, that business grew rapidly and I sold it three years later.

And that’s just scratching the surface! My experience also includes:

  • Consulting on the creation of a web-based business application, which won an E-Fusion Award for Most Innovative Technology in the Insurance Industry
  • Negotiating marketing deals with high visibility partners, like Visa
  • Setting up sales and customer support processes
  • Managing front end web development for a complex online business

I’ve spent my career starting, building, and managing businesses from a broad spectrum of industries, in a steady progression of responsibility and experience. I’ve learned so much over the past 30 years and I want to take that knowledge and help other business owners.
